Governor Hosts 2006 Youth of the Year Event

On March 6th, 2006 Kelly Barefield from the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County was awarded and honored with Washington State Youth of the Year at the Governors Mansion in Olympia Washington by Governor Christine Gregoire. Who We Are

• A separate 501-c-4 non-profit corporation (think of it as a “trade association” of Boys & Girls Clubs in the state)

• Unites the independently operating Boys & Girls Clubs in the state of Washington

• Provides a mechanism for joint decision making, communication, exchange of ideas, and cooperative action among Clubs in the state of Washington 

• Promotes public awareness of youth development and challenges facing today’s youth 

• Provides a mechanism for distribution of state funding to the member Clubs, and a liaison between the Clubs and state government

What We Do

Altogether, our Clubs offer programs at a total of 126 separate locations, including Clubhouses, Native lands, public housing, schools, and community centers. We currently serve 68,685 Washington state youth in grades K-12 through annual membership. We offer dedicated youth facilities that are open daily, staffed by professionals, and offer programs that work.

Our Clubs and programs are available and affordable to all youth. The average annual membership cost to join the Boys & Girls Club is about $20 per year, with scholarships available. The total cost of service to the Club for each child is approximately $260 per year. Hence the need for fundraising, grant development, and contracts for service on local, county and state levels.
